"We shall never leave you, we shall never forsake you"
The Sentinels of Freedom's mission is to provide life changing opportunities to men and women of the U.S. Armed forces who have suffered severe injuries and need the support of grateful communities to realize their dreams. We help veterans that have endured amputations, severe burns, blindness, deafness, paraplegia and other life altering injuries on or after 9/11/2001. For every American who has died in battle, dozens more have survived, thanks to cutting edge medical care. That means, unlike any other time in history, many more severely wounded are coming home faced with the challenge of putting their lives back together.
We provide four year "Life Scholarships" to help vets become self sufficient. Our vets are finding that once they're released from the hospital, they face the everyday hardships of finding a home, continuing their education, or going to work to support their families.
We strive to guide these service men and women to regain their independence, financial stability, job security, and to attain home ownership by the end of their four year commitment.
How the Program StartedThe Sentinels of Freedom is a national organization with a shared mission. It was founded by Mike Conklin of Danville, California. Conklin is the father of three Army Rangers. He was inspired to reach out to veterans after one of his own sons was severely injured in Iraq in 2003. He was impressed by the level of care and support that his son received in military hospitals and from others in the community. It was this inspiration, as well as the desire to do something tangible to support U.S. troops, that led Mr. Conklin to organize the first volunteer team made up of local leaders, area businesses and community groups - just in time for his son's return home in 2004.
Since then local chapters have formed across the United States and many others service members have benefited from the program. They are all flourishing thanks to the teams of volunteers that have found room in their communities and have assumed a role in helping wounded soldiers to regain their independence - one Sentinel, one victory at a time .
The scholarship recipients are called 'Sentinels' in honor of their sacrifice and commitment to guarding America's freedoms.
